I want to pursue a career in writing, what entry-level jobs should I be trying to get?

I'm looking to change careers from my current IT career which is not really a passion. I have a BA in History and I have a few clips from a defunct newspaper and a few clips that have been published online. I would like to write articles giving advice of some sort since I enjoy helping others find their way.

1. Start freelancing to build up your portfolio. It takes time but if you search the internet everyday you'll find some good opportunities. Also, you can volunteer your time at a charity doing press releases and newsletters. This will give you portfolio pieces and give you contacts.

For actual jobs, try getting an internship at a newspaper or magazine. Paid writing jobs usually start with proofreading and copyediting.

Good luck!

2. There is no "right" answer to your question, but you can certainly write while doing any job. If you hope to land a job with a newspaper, you likely won't even be considered with a journalism degree, but you could always write a blog.

Thanks for asking,
Rod
